Editorials English Vocabulary Words Set 36

English Vocabulary for Bank Exams: SBI PO, NIACL, NICL, Bank of Baroda, IBPS PO. The following vocabulary words are taken from The Editorials of Newspapers like The Hindu, The Economist, Indian Express, etc. which are important for the upcoming exams. Add some more words to your English vocabulary words list.

  1. Riposte – a quick, clever reply to an insult or criticism.

    • Synonyms: maneuver, retort, counter, rejoinder, sally,  retaliation
    • Antonyms: question, request
    • Usage: She did a brilliant riposte to an insult.
  2. fait accompli – an accomplished fact; a thing already done

    • Synonyms: done deed,  star grim reality, irreversible accomplishment
    • Usage: The results were presented to shareholders as a fait accompli
  3. Deterrent – discouraging through instilling doubt or fear of the consequences.

    • Synonyms: disincentive, dissuasion, obviation, preclusion, preemption
    • Antonyms: incentive, encouragement
    • Usage: Cameras are a major deterrent to crime.
  4. Malaise – a general feeling of discomfort, illness, or unease

    • Synonyms: despair, disquiet, doldrums, illness, pain, debility, decrepitude
    • Antonyms: calmness, cheer, comfort
    • Usage: Many citizens who live near the contaminated lake are complaining of a malaise that keeps them bedridden.
  5. Perilous – full of danger or risk.

    • Synonyms: dicey, hazardous, precarious,rugged, shaky, ticklish, treacherous
    • Antonyms: calm, certain, definite
    • Usage: The economy is in a perilous state
  6. Prerogative – an exclusive right, privilege, etc.

    • Synonyms: entitlement, advantage, birthright, appanage, droit
    • Antonyms: duty, obligation
    • Usage: In some countries, higher education is predominantly the prerogative of the rich
  7. Accentuate – make more noticeable or prominent.

    • Synonyms: emphasize, highlight, point up, accent, spotlight
    • Antonyms: divert,
    • Usage: Children sometimes suffer from low self-esteem when their parents constantly accentuate their mistakes.
  8. Lingering – lasting for a long time or slow to end.

    • Synonyms: abiding, enduring, ingrained, persistent, protracted, recurrent
    • Antonyms: ending, ephemeral, fleeting, superficial
    • Usage: There are still some lingering doubts in my mind
  9. Elusive – difficult to find, catch, or achieve

    • Synonyms: ambiguous, fleeting, illusory, incomprehensible, puzzling, subtle
    • Antonyms: definite, honest, intelligible. stable
    • Usage: Success will become ever more elusive
  10. Largesse – generosity in bestowing money or gifts upon others.

    • Synonyms: endowment, philanthropy, benefaction, oblation
    • Antonyms: hindrance, malevolence, stealing
    • Usage: When I was in need, I benefited from the largesse of an anonymous donor.
